London Broncos head coach Joey Grima has cited a lack of enthusiasm for Sunday’s resounding 40-6 defeat against Sheffield Eagles in the Kingstone Press Championship.

A Rhys Williams try, with Wes Naiqama adding the extra points, did little to gloss over a poor performance from the Broncos.

After last season’s relegation, a narrow 26-22 opening-day win against Doncaster had settled fans' nerves but a deflated Grima did little to ease concerns after the Eagles had repeatedly ripped through his side with ease.

“We were just out-enthused by a side that were motivated and wanted to win, a lot more than we did today in particular areas,” Grima told the club website.

“I’m not suggesting that our players don’t go out there with the view to win because we do that every week.

“We didn’t compete hard enough, and it was clear by some of the tries that Sheffield scored that their energy and their competitiveness was there for everyone to see.”

Grima also confirmed that Nick Slyney, Richie Mathers, Joe Keyes and Josh Cordoba all picked up injuries during the defeat.

The result leaves the Broncos in eighth place in the Championship table and they face an away trip to Leigh Centurions on Sunday.
