Totteridge-based para-badminton star Meva Singh Dhesi won silver in the men’s doubles at the Hertfordshire Para-Badminton Tournament 2015 on Saturday.
The 60-year-old had his left leg amputated above the knee after a car crashed into him around 30 years ago.
However, that has never stopped Dhesi playing badminton, a sport he picked up using a borrowed wheelchair in 2011 before winning silver at the English Championships after minimal practice.
Now the former greengrocer has built on his success at the Spanish International Para-Badminton International in Alcudia, Spain earlier this year by winning silver in Welwyn Garden City.
Competing in the SU5 competition, Dhesi and partner Gobi Ranganathan lost 2-0 in the final to David Follett and Connor Dua-Harper.
Dhesi was playing on a full court rather than the half he usually plays on and commented: “I thought why not? And I came back with a silver medal, which isn’t bad.
“It was a good competition for a local tournament.”
