Barnet have taken up the option to extend top scorer John Akinde’s contract by a year – three days after Martin Allen refuted talk of a move away from The Hive this month.

The Bees’ 11-goal top scorer will be fit to face Stevenage on Saturday after sitting out the goalless draw with Carlisle United at the weekend.

Akinde joined Barnet on a two-year contract from Alfreton Town in 2014 and scored 33 times in all competitions last season, landing the Conference’s Golden Boot with 31 of those strikes coming in the league.

There were rumours on Saturday the former Portsmouth striker had been subject of an offer from Championship side Wolverhampton Wanderers.

However, head coach Allen moved quickly to quash talk of a January exit when asked afterwards.

He said: “Not that I know of. He’s had a tight hamstring all week and he said to me before the game it didn’t feel right.

“If John’s not right he doesn’t play. He has to be 110 per cent fit. He has to be well looked after and managed. His game is about pace and power so he’s got to be right.”

Speaking to the club's website today, Allen said: "This morning I’ve had a chat with John Akinde and I’ve informed him that the club are taking up the option on his contract.

"We’re happy and he’s delighted. So it’s good news all round, and that should now settle everybody down.

"John will also be fit for Saturday."
