Barnet golfer Andrew Johnston won his first European Tour title this afternoon after victory at the Open de Espana.

The North Middlesex Golf Club member handled brutal conditions all week superbly and posted a total of one over par to finish one shot clear of Joost Luiten.

An opening four-under-par round of 67 put 'Beefy' Johnston in a strong position. He posted two scores of 74 before holding his nerve over the closing 18 holes to land his breakthrough victory.

Johnston told the European Tour website: "I'm pretty speechless, so happy with the way I've played.

"I drove the ball well all week, chipped and putted well all week, I struggled a bit with my irons the first three days but I just kept going and kept digging in and then on the fourth I found something."

He added: "I think I might wake up some time next week and go 'Oh my God'.

"I can't wait to get back to North Mid, get hammered and see my mum and brother and see them and just celebrate."

It was Johnston's first win in his 63rd European Tour event. The 27-year-old tied for fourth at the Qatar Masters at the start of this year and his previous best finish on tour was third place at the Alfred Dunhill Championship last season.
