Experienced centre-back Michael Nelson will remain at Barnet next season after signing a new contract with the club.

Nelson, who has made 634 appearances throughout his 18 year professional career, played 32 times for the Bees last season.

The new deal will keep him at the Hive until the end of the 2016/17 campaign and Nelson was pleased to have come to the agreement with the club.

“I’m delighted to have signed a new contract with the club. I’ve been speaking to the manager and the chairman throughout May,” he told the Barnet website.

“Everything went well last season and I really enjoyed it. I had one disappointing spell out injured, where I missed a bit of game time, but it was enjoyable overall.”

The 36-year-old can reflect on a season in which he helped Martin Allen’s side maintain their standing in League Two with ease.

He is now hoping the club will continue to move forward, and is excited by the prospect of improving on the 15th placed finish they achieved in their first season back in the Football League.

“This group of players seems to be quite together, so hopefully next season will be even better than last year,” he said.

“I am sure that once the manager builds his squad he will have a target in pre-season, but I think the club wants to keep progressing.

“We want to improve on last year – win more games, get more points, and see where it takes us. Personally I think there is more to come from me next season too.”

“I would like to have been a bit more involved at the start of the season, but I’m quite pleased with how I finished it. Hopefully I can carry that form into next season and keep progressing.”

In other news, Bees winger Luke Gambin could be in line to make his international debut after receiving a call-up from Malta.

The 23-year-old will be hoping to play a part as the Falcons take on the Czech Republic on Friday or when they meet Austria the following Tuesday.
