The youngest olympian in the whole of Rio 2016, Barnet's Gaurika Singh, was knocked out of the women's 100m backstroke despite winning her heat in Brazil yesterday.
Singh, 13, finished 31st out of 34 competititors in the field during qualification, and just under eight seconds off the pace to reach the semi-finals, despite winning her three-woman opening heat of the day in a time of 1:08.45.
She is the youngest of more than 10,000 olympians, and nearly 50 years younger than its eldest, Australian equestrian rider Mary Hanna.
