Hendon captain Kevin Maclaren has left the club by "mutual agreement" in the wake of a mass brawl in Saturday's abandoned game with AFC Sudbury.

An eight-year spell at Silver Jubilee Park, spanning nearly 300 games, ended in acrimonious circumstances when he was sent off in the dying moments of the Isthmian Premier League game – despite having been substituted some 20 minutes earlier.

Maclaren already had a chequered past with the Greens, and was banned from football for a year in 2015 for his part in a confrontation following a game against Wingate and Finchley the previous year.

With Hendon trailing 2-1 at Silver Jubilee Park in second-half injury time, a mass brawl was sparked in the corner of the pitch, which soon spilled over to both benches.

The situation eventually led the match referee to call the game off altogether, shortly after dismissing Maclaren for violent conduct.

The Greens released a statement on Saturday stating the official had been given "no option" but to abandon the match due to the severity of the incident, before they announced the decision to terminate Maclaren's association with the club this afternoon.

Manager Gary McCann said: "Whenever Kev put the Hendon shirt on he wore it with great pride and gave absolutely everything for this club, never anything less than 100 per cent and I had no hesitation in appointing him as captain.

"His emotions got the better of him on Saturday in his first game back for 8 weeks in a crucial fixture.

"I am saddened that it has ended this way and for me personally Kev gave so much and will be sorely missed, not only as a player and captain but also as someone that I could fully trust in my dressing room. It will be a lesser place without him."
