Bad luck is in high demand in Hendon, it seems, after the Greens fell victim to a second abandonment in three days at Silver Jubilee Park last night – while well on their way to just a second home league win of the season.

On Saturday, Gary McCann's side's game with AFC Sudbury was called off in the dying moments in the midst of a mass brawl - less bad luck, more bad judgement, perhaps.

With captain Kevin Maclaren leaving the club in the wake of the incident, it had already been a week to forget for McCann prior to last night's game.

Having found form so hard to come by on their own patch this season, it would have provided some welcome relief for the boss, and the club's fans, to see Hendon take the game to their visitors from the off last night.

Fog had lifted sufficiently for the game to kick-off in north London, and 11 minutes the Greens took the lead with a fine move.

Matt Ball spotted Marcel Barrington's run and found him with a pinpoint pass, but rather than shooting himself, he unselfishly fed Reis Stanislaus.

Another fine delivery made it easy for the onrushing forward to fire the ball into the roof of the net for a slick opener.

Chances fell away for a while after the opener, until the Greens doubled their money from their next real opening of the night.

From a Sam Murphy corner, Arthur Lee pounced to head beyond stranded goalkeeper Jake Gidden, and former Hendon man Ollie Sprague on the line.

That was as good as it got, both in terms of football and visibility - and 35 minutes in, the game was called off by the match referee as fog submerged the ground once again.

An understandably weary McCann said after the decision: “That is just typical of the luck we have been having. We were really good and thoroughly deserved our two-goal lead.

“As much as I was pleased with the way that we had gone forward, I was even happier with the way we defended the few set plays Billericay had. We won every challenge in our penalty area.

“For the last 30 minutes, it was as well as we have played in the past few months. There is plenty that we can build on from that, but now we have to make it really good performance for the full 90 minutes.”
