Harriers finish fourth at home meeting

Some possible future Olympians were in action at Copthall Stadium on Saturday.

Shaftesbury Barnet’s men finished fourth in their British Athletics League home meeting, but only just missed out on second place. Coming into the last race, three clubs were vying for the runners-up spot and only eight points separated them at the end of the day.

Barnet will need to repeat this effort later this month in the final match of the season to ensure Premiership safety.

Meanwhile, the ladies finished a creditable sixth in their final UKWAL match.

The Harriers were missing a number of athletes due to their participation in Beijing, which meant it was always going to be a difficult day.

While sixth on the day was a fair reflection of the team's strength, the final overall league position of fifth was not a true reflection of the talent at the club.

But that is a price the club have to pay in an Olympic year, with their top performers usually busy competing elsewhere.
