Barnet Copthall Swimming Club sent a team of 54 swimmers to compete in the first weekend (of three) of the Middlesex County Swimming Championships. This first weekend of competition was dedicated to 50m sprints and the long-distance events.
Barnet Copthall ended the sprint events with a total of 13 individual champions and a further 12 silver and four bronze medallists. The Middlesex sprint champions are Freddie Cornwell, Olivia Chichon, Yaron Ash, Charlie Boldison, Aidan Doherty, Jodie Hare, Paige Powell, Shannon Powell and Yutaro Sahara.
Seven of Barnet Copthall’s hardiest swimmers then also competed in the long-distance events over 800m and 1500m. This resulted in Madeleine Tichborne, 14, becoming county champion over 800m, and a further three silver and three bronze medals.
The 800m freestyle also earned 12-year-old Anum Bandey the Pakistan women’s national short course record, when she swam the 32-length race in a time of 10.18.35.
Head coach Rhys Gormley said: “This is an excellent start to this year’s county championships, with county champions and medallists at both ends of the swimming spectrum of events.
“It is a great achievement for Anum Bandey to set a new Pakistan national record in the 800m freestyle."
