Scotland have been forced into a late change for Saturday's EMC Test with Tonga in Aberdeen, with Ryan Grant replaced at loosehead prop by Kyle Traynor.

Glasgow Warrior Grant failed a fitness test on a calf problem sustained against South Africa, with Bristol's Traynor promoted off the bench to start at Pittodrie.

It is the sixth change to the team following the loss to South Africa. Traynor will win his first cap in three years and his fourth in all after being an unused replacement in the first two Tests of the autumn, against New Zealand and the Springboks.

Uncapped Glasgow prop Gordon Reid has been named on the bench.

Traynor's promotion comes after the retirement of Allan Jacobsen, Scotland's most-capped prop with 65 appearances, earlier this week.

Scotland head coach Andy Robinson has watched Traynor in action in the Championship, but nevertheless it is a rapid rise for a player who left Edinburgh in the summer due to a lack of first-team opportunities.

Last week Scotland were also forced into a late change when Alasdair Strokosch was ruled out and flanker John Barclay was drafted in.

Defence coach Matt Taylor said: "It's unlucky for Ryan. All week he's been struggling with a calf. Kyle's coming in, he's looking forward to the opportunity and he's going to do a real good job for us."

Traynor said: "I've known Ryan's been struggling all week so I've just prepared as if I was going to start.

"Today was the final call. To get the call off Andy at the end of the session was great."
