Enfield Ignatians' youth sides in action at Saracens' new ground Allianz Park
2:17pm Monday 18th February 2013 in Saracens
Enfield Ignatians' youth section broke new ground on Sunday after playing two matches on Premiership giants Saracens new artificial pitch at Allianz Park.
The Colts took on rivals Cheshunt and the Enfield side completed a 22-5 victory.
Roared-on by some vociferous support in the stands, Ignatians' edged a tense first-half following a Sam Harmer try and a conversion and penalty from the boot of fly-half Paul Duke.
A far more assured Enfield had Cheshunt exactly where they wanted them in the second-half and wrapped the game up following further scores from Conrad Edgar and Maurice Nwakor and a second conversion from Duke.
The Under-16s were unfortunate not to salvage a draw from their match against Stockwood Park.
Stockwood looked to be easing to victory after going 17-3 up but tries from Lewis White and Dillon Adabie, one of which was converted, added to an earlier penalty from Alex Bucknall, moved Enfield to within two points.
It all hinged on the final conversion attempt which agonisingly hit the uprights and the opportunity was missed.
Youth chairman Harold Pritchard said: "We had originally planned to play just one game, which was the Colts fixture and send just one coach.
"However, the response throughout the club was terrific and in the end we played two games and sent five coaches to Allianz Park which included a massive travelling support.
"I estimate that around 300 people from the club watched the two games and, obviously, if you factor in the numbers of the Cheshunt and Stockwood Park contingents, then the numbers were clearly that much bigger.
"Originally, the idea was that we were to have access to the pitches only. However, Saracens were very generous and also made the stands, changing rooms and some concessions available to us once they became aware of the numbers involved, and this added to the bonus of the sunny weather, made for a very memorable occasion.”
