Richard Wigglesworth admits the sheer depth of scrum-half talent at Stuart Lancaster’s disposal has made his return to the England fold all the more special.

It has been 15 months since Saracens’ Wigglesworth last played for England, with two performances off the bench against Argentina back in June 2013 coming two years after he last donned the Red Rose.

However that could all change on Saturday after the Saracens number nine was named on the bench by head coach Lancaster with Samoa visiting Twickenham.

Wigglesworth has arguably been the form scrum-half in the Premiership for some time now but with Danny Care, Ben Youngs and Lee Dickson around he has found time on the international stage rare.

But Wigglesworth insists having such strong rivals for that England number nine shirt makes his comeback even sweeter.

“It has been tough to get back because of the qualities of the other scrum-halves and it makes it that much sweeter because I know it is such tough competition but I am excited for Saturday night,” he said.

“I am happy with my form and I am really happy at the club and they have done a lot for me in the last couple of years as I strive to get here and play for England.

“I went to Saracens to see where that leads to and that has been my focus really, but the last couple of years I have had a shift about not worrying about things I can’t control and just worry about myself and my form.

“If good things come off the back of that then so be it but if they don’t then I can sleep at night knowing I have given it everything to make myself a better player.

“I did worry, you worry all the time. It was just in a negative way though, I was looking at all the other quality players and seeing what they were doing.

“I just started worrying about myself and started making mini improvements and here I am.

“It is unfortunate but I am pretty proud to be selected knowing how good the other guys are and I have my first foot in the door and I have just got to make sure I give a good account of myself.”

Wigglesworth is known as one of, if not the, best kicking scrum-halves currently on England’s books.

And with this part of the England’s game coming under intense scrutiny both in defeats to New Zealand and South Africa this month already, Wigglesworth is eager to stamp his authority against Samoa.

“I think I am an experienced guy now and that I make the decisions at the right time so I think I have worked a lot and my kicking game has helped and I want to take some responsibility on that and be an influence on the team,” he added.

“It is as much to do with the organisation of kicking at nine than anything else like the technique for example.

“Making sure you get your blockers in and seeing if your winger is on his feet, that sort of stuff that I am used to and can add a bit of calm when needed so we get the best possible outcome out of it.

“At Saracens we are well drilled and I want to bring that sort of style to England in terms of being organised and getting after the ball and being organised.”
