Saracens centre Brad Barritt is still in contention to play for England against Scotland this Saturday after injuring his ankle in Sunday’s 26-17 win at London Wasps.

The 28-year-old was replaced by Tim Streather in the 57th minute but director of rugby Mark McCall believes the Durban-born England cap will be able to feature for the Red Rose at Twickenham.

McCall told the club website: “We all very hopeful that the injury isn’t too serious. We believe that Brad deserves it to be not too serious as he’s been playing very well and he’s massively in contention to play for England this weekend so fingers crossed it’s OK.”

Trailing 17-3, the Men in Black scored 17 unanswered points to win at the Ricoh Arena, taking the Premiership’s last unbeaten home record in the process.

Tries from Chris Wyles and Jackson Wray were added to by 16 points from the boot of Alex Goode, leaving McCall thrilled with his side’s comeback.

He enthused: “We’re delighted with the win and delighted with the performance. I think it was impressive that having gone 17-3 down the players had the clarity of thought and the common sense that it wasn’t really a 17-3 game.

“They scored two tries in two minutes, both from 60 metres out, which they are very capable of doing.

“We hadn’t been under the pump or under pressure during that time, so the players deserve great credit for sticking to their guns and over the course of the next 60 minutes we built enormous pressure on Wasps and we got we deserved,” stated the Ulsterman.

Pivotal to Saracens’ victory were the performances of man-of-the-match Richard Wigglesworth and Jamie George.

And McCall rightly heaped praise on the duo for their part in securing a win which leaves the Wolf Pack tucked in behind second-placed Exeter Chiefs by a solitary point.

Addressing Wigglesworth’s display, he said: “Everybody is important in the game plan. It’s one thing to have a plan, and another to execute it and Richard Wigglesworth’s accuracy, his understanding of where the space was and how to build pressure was magnificent today.

“He showed all his qualities. In the first twenty minutes we over-hit a few kicks from nine, but when they were more contestable Wasps made a lot of mistakes in the back field.”

Turning his attention to George, McCall added: “He was magnificent out there today. Jamie is underrated; he has a sense of timing and a sense of space. He carries the ball better that people think, his defensive game has improved unbelievably this season because he’s played as much as he has.

“He throws the ball as well as anybody else in England, and for me, he is as good a hooker as there is going around at the moment.”

Next up for Sarries is a visit from Premiership leaders Northampton Saints in the LV=Cup semi-final at Allianz Park (12pm kick-off).

England head coach Lancaster names his England squad to face Scotland later this week.
