Saracens loose forward Jacques Burger is to return to international rugby this week as Namibia take on Russia in the first Test of the Windhoek Draught Friendship series.

Burger has not played for Namibia since they went down 12-19 against Canada in Colwyn Bay in November last year, but will captain the side on Saturday.

It will be his first appearance for his country on home soil since November 2009.

The Sarries player, 31, told Rugby365: “It is always great to play in front of your people, friends and family. The senior players will all be back and we need to support the very talented local based players with our experience and decision making on the field. I really can’t wait to play for Namibia again.”

Namibia have been left reeling by the resignation of coach Danie Vermeuelen less than 100 days before the World Cup gets underway, but Burger asserted his side’s commitment to the cause: “There was a lot said and done off the field but with us as players nothing has changed.

"To represent your country is a privilege not many people enjoy. We promise our supporters that we will continue to give our best, stay positive and work towards our goal of recording a first ever victory at a Rugby World Cup.”
