Saracens' Billy Vunipola scored the try which gave Rugby World Cup hosts England a bonus point win over Fiji at Twickenham in the opening match of the tournament tonight.

The Men in Black number eight went over for the Red Rose's fourth try of the evening to secure a 35-11 win.

With Wales and Australia to follow in Pool A, that additional point could prove crucial as England bid to win the Webb-Ellis Trophy for the first time since 2003.

Centre Brad Barritt was the only member of the Saracens contingent to start for Stuart Lancaster's side but Owen Farrell, Richard Wigglesworth, Mako and Billy Vunipola were all introduced as replacements.

England led when George Ford kicked a third-minute penalty before the host nation were awarded a penalty try ten minutes later.

Full-back Mike Brown then crossed the line for the first of two tries, though Ford failed to add the extras.

Nemani Nadolo went over for the Pacific Islanders on 30 minutes but the conversion was missed. Ford and Nadolo traded penalties before half time to give England an 18-8 lead.

Sarries' Farrell enhanced that after the restart with a penalty of his own before Brown crossed for a second time and the Men in Black fly-half again dissected the posts to earn the extras.

Billy Vunipola added a potentially vital fourth try at the death with clubmate Farrell converting.

England face Wales at Twickenham next Saturday.
