A chief fire officer has appeared in court charged with raping a woman.

Derbyshire Chief Fire Officer Sean Frayne appeared before magistrates in Derby this morning ,charged with raping the woman between November 30 2006 and January 1 2007.

The 47-year-old, from Etwall, Derby, spoke only to confirm his name and address during the brief hearing.

Derbyshire Fire Service said Frayne, who has been with the service since 1997, has been suspended from his post until further notice.

Deputy District Judge Miller bailed him to next appear at Derby Crown Court on April 14.
