The man arrested over the abduction of missing five-year-old April Jones was known to her family, it has emerged.

Mark Bridger, 46, from Machynlleth, was on foot when detained by police - less than 24 hours after April had been seen getting in a mystery van on the quiet housing estate where she lives.

Tonight a vehicle was being examined by forensics teams and Mr Bridger was facing questions from detectives.

The developments in the investigation came shortly before April's shellshocked parents Coral, 40, and Paul, 43 had been due to make a public appeal at a press conference.

It is understood details about the arrest meant the couple were too upset to appear before the cameras.
