Jazz is the music of opportunity, movable and shakeable; it flows, bends and goes any way you will. Born from the Camden Jazz Weeks, the London Jazz Festival has been showcasing the best of international, European and homegrown talent since 1992.

Now a ten-day event, the festival is reaching new audiences at venues across the capital including Green Note in Camden and the North London Tavern.

The Forge in Camden still takes centre stage, however, with its strong programme of gigs starting on Friday, November 12 with jazz, blues, soul singer and pianist Anthony Strong, who has just released his debut album Guaranteed.

There are gigs on almost every day after that and on Sunday, November 14, Forge audiences have the opportunity to take part in a Choir Workshop with Hertfordshire resident Pete Churchill, professor ofjazz studies at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and tutor at the Royal Academy of Music. Pete will also play a concert on Sunday evening.

Later in the week, Pete’s wife, pianist Nikki Iles, teams up with jazz singer Tina May for a night of contemporary standards by Kenny Wheeler, Oliver Nelson and Horace Silver.

Rounding off the week, vibraphonist, composer and multi-instrumentalist Orphy Robinson revisits the golden years of ‘80s soul with Brit funk crew Savanna on Saturday, November 20 and London nu-jazz four-piece Kairos 4tet play at the venue on Sunday, November 21.

Over at North Finchley artsdepot on Saturday, November 13, British jazz guitarist John Etheridge (Soft Machine) plays one of his many festival appearances, this time around pairing up with violinist Christian Garrick to pay tribute to gypsy strummer Django Reinhardt. Soul and folk singer Natalie Williams, The Scottish National Jazz Orchestra and sawa blues artist Muntu Valdo Free are also visiting artsdepot during the festival’s run.

Lauderdale House, meanwhile, plays host to Musician of the Year in this year’s Parliamentary Jazz Awards, Mark Lockheart (Loose Tubes) on Thursday, November 18, playing in a special collaboration with Chris Laurence and Liam Noble and featuring new arrangements from his latest album, In Deep.

While over at Kings Place, The Bad Plus Residency piano trio hosts a long weekend of sound that embraces everything from Stravinsky to Queen, to jazz standards and new compositions from November 18-21.

Jazz also gets a look in at Chickenshed on Friday, November 19, with The Gareth Williams Power Trio, featuring bassist Laurence Cottle and drummer Ian Thomas.

Completing the north London link, all three started out with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra in Southgate.
