Labour's county council candidate for Potters Bar East has pledged to regenerate the high street and make sure people are not "unduly affected" by government cuts.

Software developer John Doolan, 40, who has previously stood in Hertsmere Borough Council elections, has said he is standing not as a career politician, but as a local man with the interests of the public at heart.

He said: “I am concerned about the way the Conservatives dominate the county council. If elected, I will be an alternative voice and will stand up for the interests of the people.

“If I am voted in, people will get someone who listens to what they want the council to do for them.

"I am concerned about the effects of government cuts and want to make sure people are not unduly affected by them.”

Mr Doolan, who lives in Quakers Lane and has been a Potters Bar resident for seven years, added he would also try to fight “the death of the high street”, an issue that concerns many residents he has met while out canvassing.

He said: “Shops are closing, there are gaps in Potters Bar High Street, charity shops are springing up everywhere.

“I would introduce free parking after 3pm, improve the roads and do more to encourage local businesses and local shops.”

Mr Doolan added he would bring a fresh perspective to a council that contained a majority of councillors who were retired.

He said: “Running in these elections is a serious thing for me, it is not a one-off.”
