Barnet Borough Council has been handed a £200,000 grant to install more charging points for electric cars.

The authority is now giving motorists the chance to have their say about where the power points should be located.

It was given the money by Mayor of London Boris Johnson to pay for four new charging locations in Barnet.

The borough already has six electric charging points at Waitrose supermarket in High Barnet, Whestone and Finchley, as well as Brent South Retail Park, Mill Hill, and Jemca in Edgware Road.

Officials at the council are keen to encourage more environmentally friendly travel.

Councillor Dean Cohen, who is responsible for environmental policy, said: “We have already shown a willingness to support electric vehicles in Barnet and over the coming months we will be looking at ways to increase the number of electric charge points if we can.

“Electric cars are becoming more popular around the country, especially in London, and we want to make sure that Barnet is ahead of the curve. We are keen to hear from owners of electric cars about where they would most like charging points to be located.”

According to the Department for Transport there were 4,132 electric cars registered from 1992 to 2012 and 351 electric cars registered within the Greater London from January 2010 to February 2013.
