A driver is urging people to appeal parking tickets they received because a sign showed the wrong date.

Amanda Shacham, of Holders Hill Gardens, Hendon, noticed several cars in her street were given parking tickets during the last rugby match at Allianz Park stadium, on Sunday, September 28.

A sign at the end of the street alerts people to the next game, as the area is a controlled parking zone on match days.

On closer inspection, Mrs Shacham realised the sign still showed the previous match date – which was May 17.

She said: “I think it’s unfair, because if you had come through my road you wouldn’t have known. The fine was wrong. If they don’t put the right date, how are you to know? It’s an injustice.

“They shouldn’t wait for people to come forward. You have got to give people the benefit of the doubt. It’s a no-brainer.

“If the tickets have been paid, it’s because they probably didn’t know. How infuriating if you don’t get notified about the match. It’s very annoying if you have paid the ticket.”

Mrs Shacham, 48, counted ten cars near her house with tickets, and left notes advising their owners to contest the fines.

She said: “I had a bit of a Victor Meldrew moment. I don’t know these people, but there were quite a few cars affected. There’s nothing like parking tickets to get us fired up.

“It’s been fine before, the council just slipped up. It shouldn’t be missed. They changed the other signs. I wondered why there hadn’t been a game yet at the end of September.”

The mother-of-three, who has lived in the area for more than 20 years, added: “When these matches come along we don’t get a printed letter. You have to spend your life looking at the signs.

“Why should you have to be so vigilant? Why should it be more homework to find out what’s going on? They should see it’s inconvenient.”

A spokesman for Barnet Borough Council said:

“Only two vehicles received a ticket at Holders Hill Gardens on 27th September for not displaying an Event Day permit. These permits are free for residents of the area, but because of the confusion caused by one of the signs at the entrance to this road, we have cancelled those tickets.

“Anyone who has received a ticket is able to challenge it by following the instructions on the back of the ticket. We will consider every individual case on its merits.”
