A food drive organised by a synagogue and a mosque is a “prime example” of how Mitzvah Day can build bridges, according to its organisers.

For this year’s day of good deeds, supported by the Times & Independent Series, Edgware District and Reform Synagogue has teamed up with the Husaini Islamic Centre, in Wood Lane, Stanmore.

Members of the synagogue’s 20s to 30s group will join young people from the mosque’s Jaffery’s Youth Group to collect food for people in need on Sunday, November 16.

The young people will stand outside Sainsbury’s, in Stanmore Broadway, and encourage shoppers to buy non-perishable food items to donate to charity Sufra.

Fatima Jaffer, 22, head of relief for the mosque’s youth group, said: “It promotes tolerance between the two faiths and it’s a prime example of how well we can work together.

“In this day and age we don’t really know our neighbours and we just get on with life, but different faiths can work together to help others “We want to show it doesn’t matter what religion you are.”

So far they have collected more than five tonnes of food, which has been left in the collection bank outside the mosque.

Sarah Koster, 22, who runs the 20s to 30s group and EDRS, said: “We are a mixed community and we are excited to work with the mosque.

“Mitzvah Day is all about giving back to your community. We’re really excited to be partnered with the mosque for this great cause, and show a united front.”

Last year, members of the synagogue collected food outside Sainsbury’s and are hopeful this year will be just as successful.
