A martial arts instructor said the sport inspired him to “never give up” as his group celebrated a milestone anniversary.

Ali’s Dojang Taekwondo, based at the All Saints Art Centre, in Oakleigh Road, Barnet, invited Mayor of Barnet Hugh Rayner and his wife Susan to be part of its 28th anniversary celebrations.

Owner Ali Alipour, 47, said has been practising taekwondo for 32 years and has been crowned Iranian champion seven times.

He said: “For me, it’s not just about the sport. It’s taught me about controlling my life. Through life you have happy and sad times. It taught me never to give up.”

During the party, held on October 30, 35 students aged from five to 20 were graded on their performance.

Mr Alipour added: “The first thing we focus on is ensuring the children trust themselves.

“Councillor Rayner looked like he was very interested. He tried to have a good contact with the children’s families and engaged with them. We hope to have him back at the club.”
