Two teenagers from the London Borough of Barnet are the latest recruits at CALA Homes’ Millbrook Park development in Mill Hill.  Halima Isse, 19, and Bradley Smith, 18, joined the team last month and are continuing their professional development with the upmarket housebuilder.

Miss Isse, a painter and decorator from Colindale, was offered the option of an apprenticeship position, but instead accepted the offer of a job.

She said: “I have wanted to be a painter and decorator for a few years now since helping a friend who is a property developer. I used to go and help with decorating the properties ready for people to move in and realised I loved it.

I went to Grahame Park College in Mill Hill and got my Level 1 and 2 Painting and Decorating qualifications and this is my first contract after college. I was so pleased when I was offered this role by CALA. I am really enjoying it so far and the best thing about this job is the managers - the team have made me feel so welcome.

In the future I might look at going into property development and management myself – but that is really far in the future. For now, I am really enjoying my role with CALA Homes.”

Bradley Smith, from Barnet, is an apprentice carpenter. He works on site at Millbrook Park for three days a week.

He said: “I’m in my second year at Oaklands College in St Albans. I spend two days a week there but the rest of the time I work on site and I love it.  I’m getting loads of experience learning on the job. The best thing about it is working with the other carpenters on site.

I’ve always wanted to be a carpenter and when I finish at college I’d really like to carry on working in a team like the one here at Millbrook Park. In the future I’d love to get my own workshop.”

Tony Butcher, project manager at CALA Homes’ Millbrook Park, said: “Apprentices and trainees are a really important part of the team on site. It benefits both the business and the individual to work in partnership like this and we do take on many of the young people that train with us.”
