UNIVERSITY students from Hendon marched through Central London to campaign for LGBT equality on Pride weekend.

The group of 50 students and staff from Middlesex University joined over 300 organisations on Saturday to raise awareness for issues faced by the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.

They were cheered on by a crowd of 750,000 people, including some former Middlesex University students.

This autumn, Middlesex will be entering the Stonewall Workplace Equality Index, which assesses achievements and progress on LGBT equality in the workplace.

The festival comes just weeks after Omar Mateen opened fire at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, killing 49 people and injuring 53 others.

David Williams, the university’s director for corporate engagement, said: “The whole Pride weekend was an overwhelming demonstration of love shown to the LGBT community, remembering the recent events in Orlando.

“A reminder that we are one human race – people coming together for the greater good. It was a great day to be connected to Middlesex University.’’ London’s Pride festival, run entirely by volunteers, is the biggest one-day event held in the city and is one of the largest LGBT celebrations in the world, often attracting over one million visitors.

It celebrates diversity in the LGBT community and includes theatre, dance, talks and conferences, tours and art.
