With the help of a translator speaking Farsi, he confirmed his name, address and date of birth and held his hands clasped together.

He was remanded in custody to appear at the Central Criminal Court – better known as the Old Bailey – on March 8, when he will be able to apply for bail.

Meanwhile, police will be in the area of the allotments between 2pm and 6pm today and want to speak to anyone who knew Ms Adri-Soejoko, or saw or spoke to her in the days before her death.

She was wearing black wellington boots with white spots and pink piping around the sole and top of the boot, a navy blue quilted jacket and grey trousers, the Met said.
