A football star is helping a Barnet charity celebrate Volunteer Week.

Spurs and England striker Harry Kane is supporting Volunteer Week, from June 1-7, by calling on neighbours to get involved as part of Tottenham Hotspur FC's two year partnership with the charity.

Kane won the Golden Boot in 2017 for 27 goals and was voted the Professional Footballers' Association Man of the Season by fans.

Spurs fan Mike Wood, 50, heard Spurs legend Garry Mabbutt speaking about the charity during a match last year and decided to train as a home support volunteer.

He said: “I believe very much in volunteering. It’s good for the community and it’s good for you as a person. So I went along and signed up.”

Mr Wood now supports a family by giving their 10-year-old daughter Calitha some invaluable on-on-one attention while her twin sister has round-the-clock care due to a life threatening condition.

Calitha’s older sister Talisha, 24, explains, “Having Mike in our home has made an enormous difference to our lives.

“Calitha is much more calm and controlled. She and Mike love to cook. But they also get involved in outdoor activities.

“We are a much happier family thanks to having Mike visit us.”
