Just weeks after the huge grass fire in Wanstead Flats, people are walking their dogs and the first green shoots of plant life are beginning to appear above the scorched earth.

Nearby residents were evacuated from their homes as more than 200 London firefighters tackled the biggest grass fire in their history on the afternoon of

July 15.

But thanks to a welcome respite to this summer’s heatwave, the recent rain has helped the heathland site begin to recover.

The LFB said no one was hurt and no property was damaged in the Wanstead blaze, which was the same size as 100 football pitches at its peak. Three days later, firefighters were called to a second fire, 250 metres away from Wanstead Flats, but brought it under control with an hour.
