A furniture shop was fined nearly £10,000 after being caught flytipping six times.

Barnet Council filmed two vans, one with the shop’s brand, Crazy Discounts, dumping rubbish and unwanted furniture in Lambert Way, Finchley, on six occasions between December 21, 2017, and July 4, 2018.

The owner of Crazy Discounts, based in Woodhouse Road, Finchley, pleaded guilty to five offences of flytipping at Willesden Magistrates Court on Tuesday.

The shop must pay a £5,000 fine, £2,514 in costs, £2,000 in compensation and a £100 victim surcharge.

Cllr Dean Cohen, chairman of the Barnet Council environment committee, said: “Flytipping is a criminal activity that can seriously pollute the environment and put human health at risk.

“It’s also a downright nuisance and costs this council tens of thousands of pounds a year to dispose of.

“It may seem like a cheap and easy option, but we will not tolerate flytipping in any form, and we will prosecute the people behind it.”

Barnet Council paid £400 a day, three times a week, to clear the rubbish dumped in Lambert Way.

The council confiscated the shop’s vans two months ago.

After the vans were confiscated, council contractors found the street clean and clear during their daily inspections of the area - the vans will now be handed back to Crazy Discounts after a court order.
