Plans to build 39 new flats in a town centre have been unanimously approved.

Members on Watford Borough Council’s planning committee gave the green light to develop the former Conservative Club in Rosslyn Road, Watford, into flats.

The 39 flats will all be “affordable”; 23 of the homes will be allocated to families in housing need on the council’s waiting list while the remaining 16 will be set aside for people to buy through the shared ownership scheme.

The flats at Halsey House will be of one or two bedrooms. The existing building will be demolished and a new four-storey building will be built.

There will only be 12 parking spaces but there will be cycling facilities. Hightown says 12 is the 'maximum number of spaces allowed'.

Halsey House was acquired by housing association Hightown in January this year.

Construction is expected to begin in June next year with completion by th end of 2020.

Andrew Royall, development director for Hightown Housing, said: “We’re very pleased with the decision to support this development, which will offer people a chance to find a home in a popular, well connected central Watford location.

"Our plans ensure that all of the homes at Halsey House will go to those who would otherwise be priced out of their local area.”
