A 3-2 home win kept Enfield Borough in second place in the Spartan South Midlands League Division One table but they were made to struggle for long periods by a well-organised and resolute Amersham Town side on Saturday.

Borough struck first and then equalised through two-goal Tage Kennedy, but Henderson Browne was to prove their match winner after coming on as a substitute.

"We knew what to expect from Amersham," assistant manager Roy Bleau admitted afterwards. "They have watched us a few times this season and they set out to nullify some of our more influential players.

"They were well organised and credit goes to them as they had problems even getting a team out onto the pitch and, unusually for us, their side was probably even younger than ours.

"But once we got ahead at 3-2 we wasted so many chances which is something that we can't afford to do, especially against the better teams in this division when chances will be at a premium."

Amersham set out their stall from the opening whistle by getting as many players as possible behind the ball when out of possession, but proving a threat on the counter.

After surviving an early scare, Enfield took the lead with their first attack after 11 minutes when Kennedy converted at the near post from a Franklin Domi cut back.

However, the visitors equalised midway through the opening half when a free-kick was headed back into the centre of the penalty area, Frank Chandler misdirected an attempted clearance towards his own goal and James Heady reacted quickest to score.

Enfield were then to find themselves behind at the break after Darren Putman confidently converted a penalty following a foul on Giuseppe Delgauduio by Guy Kiangebeni.

It could have got worse for the home side after the interval when Edwards had a goal ruled out for offside. But after Alie Bangura had suffered the same fate, Borough levelled after 56 minutes when Kennedy rounded Town goalkeeper David Turner after latching on to Kiangebeni's through ball.

Browne came on for his first appearance of the season soon after and he was to strike within four minutes of entering the fray, converting after Kennedy had intercepted a weak pass out of defence.

Having taken the lead Borough created, and wasted, a number of chances to make the game safe.

Kennedy managed to prod the ball past Turner only for Evan Rawlings to clear it off the line while Turner denied Browne, Kennedy and Greg Moorse three times.

Browne had a great chance to score again as he raced clear of the Amersham defence, but his control let him down and Turner was first to the loose ball.

Kennedy was then denied his hat-trick deep into added time as an Amersham defender intercepted a Browne cross and with the final kick of the match Turner held Deniz Karakaya's snapshot.
