Goals from Billy Bricknell and Bilal Sayoud saw Enfield Town through their Veolcity Trophy second round tie with a 2-1 victory over Ware that was more comfortable than the scoreline suggests.

With their FA Cup involvement already over, the game was arranged as a Saturday fixture and a goal in either half was enough for the home side to progress through to the last 16.

Sam Chaney had the first two efforts for Andy Leese’s men, first almost catching Ware goalkeeper Harry Ricketts out from a quickly-taken free-kick, before he fired narrowly wide after breaking into the box.

But the Towners did make the breakthrough in the 14th minute when Bricknell was impeded by Blues skipper Gareth Madden in the penalty area and the striker sent Ricketts the wrong way from the spot to score.

The visitors’ keeper was to keep his side in the tie with a number of good saves as Enfield pushed for a second, repelling another Bricknell effort from the edge of the area before he thwarted Sayoud.

Ware finally began to get their attacking game going midway through the opening period, but their opponents were to remain in the ascendency.

Bricknell saw another effort cleared off the line after being found by a Mickey Parcell pass, and then Ricketts excelled again to keep out Sayoud’s left-footed strike from 18 yards.

The pattern of the game continued after the break, with Sayoud coming even closer to a second goal when his latest effort hit the post and somehow stayed out.

Town’s failure to score the second goal threatened to come back and bite them in the 50th minute when Albert Adu headed down for Jack Daveney to beat Joe Wright with a scuffed shot.

But Enfield were to score again 13 minutes later when Parcell drove in a cross from the right and Sayoud got the faintest of touches to find the back of the net.

The goalscorer was to see a further effort cleared off the line as the home side saw out the remainder of the contest with relative comfort.

Meanwhile, Blue Gallagher and Junior Mubiayi have both joined Bostik South Central club Chalfont St Peter on loan.

Leese told the club website: “These two youngsters have gone to Chalfont St Peter AFC temporarily to get some game time. Their opportunities have been limited this season and it is important that they get some senior football to continue their development.

“I know Danny Edwards at Chalfont will look after them and we will monitor how they are developing over the next month or so.”

Enfield return to league action on Saturday with a trip to Corinthian Casuals at an earlier kick-off time of 2pm.
