Plans to move a bus stop forcing students to cross a busy junction to get to school have been branded “utter nonsense.”

Transport for London (TfL) wants to move the northbound stop in Barnet Hill closer to the southern ramp entrance of High Barnet Station.

It claims it will make it easier for customers to interchange between bus and the Northern Line, but parents of children at Queen Elizabeth Girls School say it will have an impact on them.

Fiona Jennings has called on the transport body to scrap the plans, as it means pupils will need to cross the busy Milton Avenue – where there was a fatal crash in June.

Jacqui Zimaras of Wycherley Crescent, High Barnet, said: “It would be ridiculous to get rid of the original bus stop. It’s utter nonsense, surely it will be better to use our money elsewhere.

“This bus stop is crucial for people in the area and these plans would also mean elderly people would have to walk further up the hill to use it, which would be difficult for them.

“If they create a lay-be for the bus stop then they will damage the environment of the hill. It is a historical hill with beautiful tress that is part of Barnet’s history and it makes no sense to cut part of it out.”

If TfL moves the bus stop but does not create a lay-by at the side of the road Ms Zimaras said it would cause significant congestion on the hill because buses would have to pull in to the side of the road at the same place cars turn into the underground station.

Ms Zimaras said: “It will be chaos and it will be dangerous. Traffic is already horrendous, if more buses stop on the hill it will make it even worse.”

The petition also says if the bus stop moves it could have a seriously increase congestion and damage the environment on Barnet Hill if they have to cut part of the grass on the hill out to make room for the buses.

Geoff Hobbs, director of public transport service planning at TfL, said: “We have proposed improvements to bus services in the area following feedback from residents and customers.

“This includes moving the bus stop on Barnet Hill closer to the Tube station to make it as easy as possible for customers to change between the two and provide better access.

“We would encourage people to respond to the consultation to help us shape our plans to best serve the local community in Barnet.”

The petition has been signed by 123 people but is aiming to get to 200 signatures.
