It’s now nine Bostik Premier Division games unbeaten for Enfield Town, but frustration was the emotion after being held to a goalless draw by Merstham at a soaking Queen Elizabeth II Stadium on Saturday.

The fifth draw of the season leaves Andy Leese’s side fourth in the table, four points behind leaders Tonbridge Angels ahead of this weekend’s trip to Margate.

The Towners were without keeper Joe Wright and Sam Youngs, who were unavailable, while Ryan Blackman fell ill on the day of the game, but they could have been in front inside a minute when Billy Bricknell headed a cross narrowly wide.

Aaron Greene was to have the next opening for the hosts when he capitalised on a defensive slip, but was thwarted by Merstham keeper Amadou Tangara at close range.

Brandon Adams fired wide after Mickey Parcell had surged forward, before a Bilal Sayoud cross from the right posed defensive questions which the visitors were eventually able to deal with.

Town continued to look the better of the sides without creating anything clear cut, with Sayoud again heavily involved as he shot high and wide from the edge of the box.

The visitors did have some sights of goal in the last 10 minutes of the first half as Gus Sow sent a volley wide, while a free-kick in a dangerous position struck the wall.

The home side were back on the front foot after the break as Greene was off target with a strike from the edge of the penalty area following a corner, but Bricknell went closer as he rolled an effort narrowly wide of the far post after beating his marker in the box.

The wet and windy conditions continued to make life difficult for both sides, but Merstham were to have the better of the opportunities as the second half continued to unfold.

Walter Figuerira fired wide and Fabio Saraiva sent an overhead kick narrowly wide, but with seven minutes left to play Tom Bird embarked on a good run down the left and cut inside before forcing Matt Nolan into a fine one-handed save with a left-footed strike.

Both sides had opportunities to nick the points at the death, but Figueira’s chip was held by Nolan to keep Enfield’s first clean sheet of the campaign, while Remi Sutton blazed over to end a disappointing encounter dominated by the weather.
