More social housing is on the horizon after councillors pushed through plans to provide extra cash for a new project.

At a full council meeting on Tuesday night, Watford Borough Council unanimously approved a proposal to develop social housing in partnership with housing association Watford Community Housing.

The aim is to now deliver social housing across a number of sites with Watford Council one of just a few who have taken up this type of scheme.

With so much building going on in the town and to come, people in Watford have raised concerns about how much will actually be affordable for those on waiting lists or looking to buy their first home, so this news, in theory, should come as a boost.

The proposals have been welcomed by Watford Labour leader, Cllr Nigel Bell.

He said: “At last with these social rented units, the council is proposing to what Labour has said for many years needs to be done.

“For many years, we have been campaigning for the council’s own 35 per cent minimum requirement for affordable and social housing to be included in every development. We are eager to see how this will move forward.”

Elected Mayor of Watford Peter Taylor said: “I’m determined to help build council houses for families in our town who need them the most. These new homes will mean that families living in temporary accommodation can be moved in to proper homes. I campaigned on this in the elections in May and I’m proud we have taken a vital step forward to help deliver this.“
