A landlord has been left picking up his tenants’ rubbish after the council reduced its number of bin collections.

Barnet Council has reduced the frequency of bin collections near Queens Mansions, in Watford Way, Hendon, from three times a week to once a week.

Prakash Tanna is the landlord of one of the flats in Queens Mansions and has been getting workers from his own construction firm to help him take rubbish to the tip.

He says it is not fair that his tenants, who are young professionals, are forced to live with a mountain of rubbish outside their home.

He said: “It’s not right these people have to live like this, I tell my tenants that they have to comply with the rules surrounding rubbish and not leave it on the street.

“But how can I tell them to leave their rubbish in their homes because all the bins are now mounting up?

“This is affecting my tenants’ happiness and my business but it’s not in my control.

“I’m helping all I can by taking some of the rubbish down to the tip but it’s literally a mountain.”

Mr Tanna has had problems with rubbish collection at the same site two years ago when the council reduced the number of bins outside the building from seven to four.

He was under the impression that there were enough bins as long as they were emptied three times a week.

However, a tenant has told him that the bins have only been emptied once in the past two weeks and were left to fill up.

A Barnet Council spokesperson said: “We are working hard to ensure that these changes go as smoothly as possible for our residents.

“We are grateful for their patience and understanding, as these substantial changes are implemented.

“It might take a little while to bed in; this is the biggest change to our bin collection rounds in the past 15 years.

“Residents were notified of the changes in advance of the new collections going live.

“These included a collection calendar leaflet, reminder postcard, and a link to our website, where residents can check their new collection day.”
