A trio of MP’s have publically backed Theresa May as she faces a no confidence vote this evening.

Sir Graham Brady announced this morning the required number of 48 letters had been reached meaning Mrs May faces a leadership challenge, amid the Brexit negotiation chaos.

A ballot will be held between 6pm and 8pm tonight where Conservative MP’s will choose whether to back Mrs May or not.

Richard Harrington, David Gauke, and Oliver Dowden this morning have backed the Prime Minister, despite all three voting to remain during the EU referendum.

Mr Harrington, MP for Watford, said: “The Prime Minister has my full support. I have always said that she is the best person for the country and the Conservative Party. Her deal with the EU is what we need to protect jobs, security and the economy. Tonight I will be backing her.

“It was a great speech from Theresa May this morning. At this critical time, we need to get behind the Prime Minister in the best interest of our constituents and the country.”

Justice Secretary David Gauke, MP for South West Hertfordshire, warned a new leader will take the Brexit negotiations back to ‘square one’.

He said removing Mrs May from her position would be “self-indulgent” and “irresponsible”.

Speaking to Sky News, he added: “We wou;dn’t have a new leader until February and then there wouldn’t be enough time to renegotiate before March 29 so we will be back at square one.

“It is not a happy scenario for the country if she loses the vote.”

Hertsmere MP Oliver Dowden added: “At this difficult time for our country, the last thing we need is a change of Prime Minister. That is why I will be supporting Theresa May in the confidence vote this evening.”

Hertsmere Labour leader, Cllr Jeremy Newmark, said: "The vote which was triggered by Tory backbenchers makes it very clear that the government is in chaos and teeters on the brink of collapse.

"If the Government falls, we'll be ready."

East of England Labour MEP Alex Mayer, who was in Strasbourg last night, where a gunman opened fire near a Christmas market killing two people, says the no confidence vote is an act of “self-indulgence” by the Tory party.

“This is an extraordinary act of self-indulgence by the Conservatives who are as ever more concerned about themselves than the fate of the country. We don’t need a Tory leadership contest, we need a General election or a People’s Vote on the deal.

“My colleagues in Brussels and Strasbourg are frankly bewildered. Chaos, confusion and tumult reigns.”
