Having sat with my husband in two wards over the past three months, I am appalled at what goes on. Importantly, medications which he had been taking for years were stopped without informing the family. Only when it was realised one was urgently now needed and they didn’t have any, could I provide some. I was refused access to his medical notes - when he was later transferred to another ward many were missing.

I asked to speak to a doctor and was told to make an appointment for a telephone call at home some days ahead. Needless to say the doctor didn’t call.

The food was inedible, but that’s another story.

The crunch came when they decided he was ‘cured’ and sent him to Hemel Hempstead hospital pending discharge. Within two days he was sent back to Watford ‘unresponsive’ in an ambulance. He was severely dehydrated. Resus was marvellous and he recovered somewhat, but gave up on December 3.

My husband never complained or made demands, so was largely ignored. I would urge all relatives of elderly patients to watch over their care. Even though I was there every day I felt helpless against the system.
