A new sapling will one day celebrate 100 years of women being given the right to vote.

Chairman of Burnham Parish Council Judith Foster planted the tree at Burnham Park Hall, watched by an appreciative audience of guests that included fellow councillors and groundsman Jim Wotherspoon.

At the event, Cllrs Ekta Kaur Ross and Lyn Mangisi also presented a cheque for £1,500 to Home-Start Slough, which has provided both practical and emotional support to struggling parents of young children in the area for the past 20 years.

The sapling will now grow into a reminder of women’s fight.

The centenary celebrations started in September, when the parish council hosted an evening in Burnham Park Hall, which included a screening of the film Suffragette, as well as speakers such as Lydia Simmons, the first person, as well as the first female and person of African descent, to become a mayor in England, Fiona MacTaggart, recently appointed chairman of the historic Fawcett Society, a charity for gender equality, and Sandeep Tak, a striker with Tottenham Hotspur ladies team.

The event was organised Cllrs Ross and Mangisi, and supported by the Women’s Vote Centenary Fund, AST Services Ltd, Burnham Business Association, local businesses and donations from the public.

Cllr Ross said: “It was humbling and truly wonderful to see all the support for this event, by the attendance, the grants, the donors and all the help in the background.

“Burnham is a historic village and it was truly fitting for us to honour such an important milestone in the history of our democracy.

“I hope this event encourages others to come forward with their ideas and let us make Burnham the centre for celebrations, a place to honour and acknowledge achievements of our society today and also to remember and commemorate those of our past.”
