As aching snow clouds drift overhead and temperatures plummet below zero homeowners have been warned to watch their pipes.

Without adequate treatment old water pipes can freeze up and then burst, soaking through carpets and wooden floors.

The Met Office’s yellow weather warning comes almost a year on from the Beast from the East that gripped much of the UK.

It led to a massive increase in burst pipes inside and outside the home due to icy temperatures and sudden thaws.

Utilities provider Affinity Water is offering free protection kits for those who want to ensure their pipes remain free flowing.

Nigel Beaven, head of communications for Affinity Water said: “With another bout of winter weather on its way, we’re urging customers to act before it’s too late.

“Any sudden drop in temperature could cause pipes and outside taps to freeze if they aren’t properly protected. Often the first you may be aware of a problem is when there is a thaw, causing the pipe to burst which then causes flooding, and also means your water supply is affected.

“The consequences can be both damaging and very upsetting but can be easily avoided if homeowners give their pipes and outside taps some extra protection.”
