A flat fire which led to two people being taken to hospital is under investigation.

Eight fire engines and around 60 firefighters were called to a fire at a shop with flats above on Winchester Road in Highams Park on Saturday.

London Fire Brigade officers were called to the scene at 12.38pm and had managed to get the fire under control by 3pm.

The first floor, roof and rear extension were destroyed by the fire.

One woman and one man exited the building before fire officers arrived.

They were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation and taken to hospital by London Ambulance Service crews.

As a result of the fire, Winchester Road was shut both directions between Highams Park station and Winchester Road Methodist Church on Saturday and Sunday.

Fire crews from Chingford, Walthamstow, Leyton, Leytonstone and surrounding fire stations attended the scene.

The cause of the fire is currently being investigated.
