Six women are to feature in a film screening locally for International Women's Day.

The film featuring Waltham Forest women is being shown at Leytonstone Library on Church Lane on March 8.

It will document the great advances of the past 100 years and celebrate women as equals in the West today and was created by education charity WorldWrite.

It is forged as a timeline and interwoven with archive, 40 women share their life stories.

The women from Waltham Forest include:

  • Ginny Hume who has spent 20 years running and commissioning services for older people with Inner London local authorities.
  • Isabel Hume, Ginny's daughter, a history of art student.
  • Jane Sandeman, a working mother, charity finance director and convenor of the Academy of Ideas Parents Forum.
  • Sally Millard, a mother of two who works as a head of finance in London.
  • Alison Small, the chief executive officer of the Production Guild of Great Britain
  • And her daughter Millie Small, a school student interested in the performing arts.

The documentary is peppered with these local stories as well as providing insight about women in the cotton mills during the war, the 1984 miners' strike, outdoor loos, terry nappies, illegal abortions, pre-marital sex, freedom and making it in what was once a man's world.

WorldWrite and film director Ceri Dingle said: "We're thrilled to be screening the film in the borough on International Women's Day, as these six inspiring women tell such great stories and have so many wise words to share. We are indebted to them for their contribution to the film. They are articulate, funny, compassionate and freedom loving, they epitomise robust women who believe everything is possible and see men as allies not enemies."

It was launched at the Battle of Ideas festival at the Barbican in central London and at the Castle Cinema in Hackney at the end of last year.

It received positive feedback from viewers.

The film was crowdfunded and a small grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund which was a collective effort by more than 100 volunteers.

The screening at Leytonstone Library will start at 7.15pm and will be followed by a Q&A with director Ceri Dingle and film contributor Jane Sandeman.
