A popular Canadian band will be performing at artsdepot next month.

collectif9, a string band from Montreal, will be performing at artsdepot on Friday, May 17, as part of their celebration of Canadian talent.

collectif9 herald in a new age in genre-bending classical music with energised, innovative arrangements of classical repertoire, presented with lights, staging, and amplification more commonly seen at rock concerts. The band delight connoisseurs with a world-class performance while opening up the genre to classical-curious newcomers.

collectif9’s show is built around their 2018 album, No Time for Chamber Music, and transforms works by Gustav Mahler, György Ligeti, Gabriel Prokofiev and others from their original form - often symphonic in nature - into chamber music for nine. It expands upon the folk melodies and rhythms audiences have come to expect from these composers, but integrates a playful flavour. New musical textures and special instrumental effects transport the listener out of the concert hall and into a world of fantasy and imagery.

The new album No Time for Chamber Music contains music written by and inspired by Romantic composer Gustav Mahler, and presents a new angle on his symphonies and lieder.

Founded out of a desire to reach a more diverse audience, the mission of collectif9 is to demonstrate the connection a listener immersed in the pop world can feel with contemporary classical music. collectif9 are musicians and friends who met as students at Université de Montréal and McGill University. Learning from the classical works that have influenced non-classical musicians and the structure of pop concerts, collectif9 look for ways to break the stigma of inapproachability, search for new ways of expression within the classical medium, and attempt to foster communication between artists.
