An 80-year-old tour guide has been presented with the Freedom of the Town in recognition of his work.

Clive Simpson, from Waltham Abbey, regularly shows guests from across the world around the historic town from Waltham Abbey Church to the Royal Gunpowder Mills.

Town Mayor Antony Watts presented Mr Simpson with the award in recognition to “enhance the town’s heritage” at the Special Council Meeting on Wednesday, May 8.

Mr Simpson, who has lived in Waltham Abbey for 20 years, is an active member of the Waltham Abbey Historical Society and a member of Waltham Abbey Town Partnership.

The long-term resident is also a group leader who regularly leads the photography club with the University of the Third Age (U3a).

His other well-known feat is forming the idea to re-create the iconic Waltham Abbey tapestry which will eventually hang on curtain poles within the town.
