These pictures show the fascinating history and people of Waltham Forest – as well as the ups and downs of London’s first Borough of Culture.
Photographer Adrian Callaghan set out to capture the borough’s “rich tapestry” and culture and “celebrate the unique character and characters of the area.”

His pictures are currently on display at at the Borough of Culture headquarters at One Hoe Street, Walthamstow and are also published in a book, Walthamstow Pictorial.
Mr Callaghan has photographed protests, performers and parades and caught some controversial moments on camera.

The pictures include protesters demanding that the former Granada Cinema, which closed in 2003, be restored to its former glory.
The council has since announced a £17 million renovation of the site with plans to reopen in three years time.

Adrian grew up in the suburbs of East London, studied photography and design at art school and created the collection to document the area he calls home.

He said: “In recent years the Olympic games, the EU referendum and gentrification have all changed the face of E17, but what remains constant is the unmistakable spirit of its residents – both old and new.
“The images in this book attempt to capture and record some of that passion.”

Adrian’s exhibition runs from May 21 to May 30 at the Borough of Culture headquarters at One Hoe Street, Walthamstow.
Adrian will also be holding a “meet the maker” evening there on Tuesday, May 28.
