Charging points for electric vehicles have been installed as part of a green energy programme.

Barnet Council has placed the first 40 lamp column charging points for electrics cars as part of its ambitious programme to promote green energy to help the environment.

A further 40 will be installed later in the year in autumn as part of the second phase of the project which is in support of the Air Quality Action Plan and Long Term Transport Strategy.

30 charging points will be added to car parks along with 22 outside of the two new leisure centres built in Victoria Recreation Ground, New Barnet, Barnet Copthall and Mill Hill.

People can now charge their vehicles for 25p an hour and can top or give it a full charge if they leave it charging overnight.

Chairman of Barnet Council's environment committee Dean Cohen said: We expect the popularity of fully electric and hybrid cars to grow and grow in the coming years.

“Electric vehicles are cheaper, cleaner and greener than conventional cars, and an increasingly convenient way of getting from A to B.

“We are happy to support their development, improving air quality in our borough and giving our residents more options for getting about in an eco-friendly way.”

The charging points offer contactless card payment and locations can been found on barnet.gov.uk/electriccharging.
