A new story-telling area has been set up in a park for primary school children.
Pupils from Ainslie Wood Primary School in Chingford were invited to the official opening of the spot in Memorial Park and were treated to a guided tour of the bugs, animals and sounds of the park by a conservation volunteer.
Ward councillor Selina Seesunkur was at the launch and said the aim of the project was to “create a magical story land for children”.
The councillor added that books were the inspiration for the Memorial Park project, which includes carved and painted wooden characters – each designed and carved by Natural Garden Designs – and a story-telling throne.
The new area is now open to the public and free to use.
Ms Louise Baldwin, assistant head teacher of Ainslie Wood Primary School, said: “The children had a great time reading their books and listening to stories accompanied by the gentle chirping of crickets and humming of bees.”
Cllr Selina Seesunkur said: “I think reading stories is an essential part of childhood, especially now where children are exposed to the delights of the iPad and sites like YouTube.
“Stories must not be forgotten and I am really pleased the children are enjoying their time in the new area. It seems to be occupied each time I visit Memorial Park.
“I hope to see a lot more children using the area, especially as we enter the summer holidays.”
