A grass fire caused major damage to a car yesterday afternoon in Barnet.

Firefighters were called at 5.15pm to St Albans Road near Chipping Barnet to reports of grass alight.

When firefighters attended, a car was found to be on fire as a result of the blaze.

Nick Markou, 34, from Leighton Buzzard, was driving back from work when he noticed smoke pouring from the road.

He said: “I just saw a large amount of smoke before fire engines turned up.

“People were going crazy over the fire and we wanted to know what was going on with the fire.

“It looked like an empty car, I don’t think anyone was inside.”

There are no reports of any injuries following the fire.

It is reported that 5X5 meters of grass was also damaged due to the fire, which was under control by 5.53pm.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this stage.
