A huge fundraising campaign in memory of a five-year-old girl born with a hole in her heart will continue with a charity walk next month.
The community of Elstree & Borehamwood and further afield are invited to take part in a walk in honour of Shani Berman, who died in 2017 from a heart defect.
Shani was just five when she died during an operation at Great Ormond Street Hospital.
Her family, who live in Elstree, are raising £70,000 which will go towards GOSH and its research into child heart transplants - they have so far raised more than £50,000.
Professor Tessa Crompton and her team wants to improve the success of these transplants by looking at ways to stop the recipient’s immune system attacking the new heart and donor tissue.
On Sunday September 8, three separate walks will take place.
The longest route of 20 miles will begin in London taking in parks before ending in Borehamwood. A 13 mile walk will begin in Hampstead Heath ending in Borehamwood while there is also an option for a five and three quarter mile walk - representing how old Shani was when she died.
Shani's mother Juliet said: "We're trying to raise £70,000 towards this vital research. This walk will hopefully get us to the target but it's going to take a lot of work from all of our participants to get there."
